Changes to Childcare Subsidies in 2026: The 3-Day Guarantee

Children playing at Child's Play | Childcare subsidy

Starting January 2026, families across Australia will see a major change in how government support for childcare works.

If you have children in daycare or are thinking about enrolling them soon, here’s everything you need to know about the new 3-Day Guarantee from the Australian government.

Quick summary

  • As of January 2026, the Australian government guarantees at least 3 days of subsidised childcare per week for children who need it.
  • Eligible families will now have access to 72 hours of subsidised childcare per fortnight.
  • Some families will receive up to 100 hours of subsidised childcare, including those with exceptional circumstances, exemptions, and families with an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander child.

What is the 3-day guarantee for subsidised childcare?

Starting 5 January 2026, all eligible families will get at least 3 days per week (or 72 hours per fortnight) of CCS, regardless of their activity levels.

This helps families with low income or irregular work get more reliable access to subsidised childcare.

How does this differ from the old childcare subsidy?

The old system (in effect until 5 January 2026) is the Childcare Subsidy Activity Test. Under this system, the number of subsidised hours you get depends on how many hours you work, study, or volunteer.

For example, if you or your partner (whichever is less) works between 8 and 16 hours each fortnight, you can access 36 hours of subsidised childcare. Meanwhile, working more than 48 hours per fortnight means 100 hours of subsidised childcare.

The new guarantee ensures families have access to 3 days per week of subsidised childcare regardless of their activity.

Are all families eligible for the 3-day guarantee?

No, not all families are eligible.

Families earning over $533,280 in 2024-2025 and/or do not meet Australian residential rules are not eligible for the subsidy.

You can find out more about childcare subsidy eligibility here or by contacting Child’s Play so we can talk you through it.

Can some families receive more than 3 days per week?

Yes. Some families can access up to 100 hours per fortnight of subsidised care if they:

  • are caring for an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander child
  • have a valid exemption or exceptional circumstances
  • meet activity requirements of more than 48 hours per fortnight

Do all families receive the same subsidy?

The subsidy amount depends on household income.

Household IncomeSubsidy amount
$0 – $85,27990% subsidy
$85,279 – $533,280Subsidy drops by 1% for every $5,000 earned over $85,279
Over $533,2800% subsidy

How do I apply for the new childcare subsidy?

If you already receive a childcare subsidy, the 3-day guarantee will be automatically applied. Your CSS will automatically update to include at least 72 hours per fortnight.

If you’re not yet receiving a childcare subsidy, you’ll need to apply through MyGov. Make sure to check your eligibility. If you’re unsure, contact Child’s Play, and we’ll be happy to help.

How does the 3-day guarantee benefit families?

More children can attend early learning

Families no longer need to prove work or study hours to access subsidised care.

This opens the door for children who previously missed out, especially those from low-income, single-parent, or casual-work households.

Reduced childcare costs

Families who previously received few or zero days of subsidised care will now receive 3 days per week, lowering weekly fees and increasing affordability.

For instance, picture a couple earning a combined $90,000 per annum. One person works full-time, and their partner works 8 hours a week.

Under the Activity Test system, they received 36 hours of subsidised childcare per fortnight.

From January 2026, they’re eligible for 72 hours per fortnight.

Based on the average Centre-Based Care hourly fee, the 3-day guarantee will save them $230 per week of care, or $11,400 per annum.

More stability for children

With a guaranteed 3 days a week, children get:

Will the new subsidy mean there’ll be fewer childcare spots?

While the government is investing in building more centres (and new Child’s Play centres are popping up all around Melbourne and the Bellarine!), many places have waitlists. It’s always a good idea to start looking early. There’s no better time than now to book a tour at Child’s Play!
