Our Incursions

Special learning experiences that children look forward to every week.

Our Child’s Play incursions

At Child’s Play, we run four incursion programmes:

  • Little Chefs Kitchen
  • Yoga Gurus
  • Disco Divas
  • Gardening and Sustainability

Each incursion programme runs over six weeks, with one session per week, plus lots of bonus sessions linked to special events throughout the year, such as Harmony Day, ANZAC Day, Diwali, Lunar New Year, and kinder graduation.

Every session is aligned to the learning outcomes in the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF). We plan separate sessions for under threes and three-to-fives, so the experience is always age-appropriate, whether your child is just finding their feet or getting ready for school.

What are incursions?

Think of them as excursions, but in the classroom. Incursions are specially organised events and activities that bring enriching, ‘real-world’ experiences to your child.

Children learn more when they’re engaged, active, and having fun. Here are just some of the benefits of incursions for early childhood development:

  • They build confidence. Trying something new is a lot less daunting when you’re surrounded by familiar faces.
  • They spark curiosity. New sights, sounds, and textures encourage children to ask questions and think in fresh ways.
  • They develop real skills. From fine motor strength in the kitchen to emotional regulation on the yoga mat.
  • They create memories. Don’t be surprised if it’s the first thing they tell you at pick-up!

Little Chefs Kitchen

Little Chefs Kitchen explores food and nutrition through hands-on cooking sessions. We’ll build cooking skills every week, from mashing seasonal fruit to safely chopping vegetables and assembling a garden salad. And the best part? Every session ends with eating what we made together.

Bonus sessions throughout the year include ANZAC biscuits, Lunar New Year dumplings, and Diwali ladoo sweets. Families receive a copy of each recipe so you can recreate the magic at home!

Yoga Gurus

Yoga Gurus introduces children to movement, breathing, and body awareness through play, storytelling, and imagination. Sessions are joyful and gentle. Children are always invited to participate on their own terms.

Each session is structured around a theme that connects movement to nature, animals, seasons, and community. We’ll learn lots of yoga poses, plus breathing techniques children can use anywhere, including ones that help with anxiety and settling before sleep.

Disco Divas

In Disco Divas, there’s no right or wrong way to dance! Children explore rhythm, world music, and self-expression. They even perform dance moves they invented themselves, and teach them to their peers!

The programme celebrates diversity through music from cultures including South Asian, African, Latin, and First Nations traditions. Bonus sessions include a Kinder Graduation showcase, Bollywood-inspired Diwali, and Halloween character dances.

Gardening and Sustainability

This is where we learn all about where food comes from, how living things grow, and what it means to care for the environment.

Children plant, tend, and harvest real food following Melbourne’s seasonal calendar, from cool-season greens in autumn to tomatoes and sunflowers in spring. Every child takes home a seedling at the end of the programme with a care card they helped create.
