Hi, I’m Sam Johnson! I’m a wife, a mum of two, and one of the proud owners of Child’s Play Early Learning, which I run with my husband Ian.
Before starting Child’s Play, I worked as a teacher in both the UK and Australia, specialising in special needs education for 14 years. Ian was an accountant for over 20 years. We’ve been together since 1999, married since 2006, and have two beautiful daughters, Millie who was born in 2007 and Alexa in 2011. They were a big part of our motivation to start Child’s Play.
We opened our first centre in 2014 and have since grown to six purpose-built centres in Tarneit, Tarneit West, Point Cook, Wyndham Vale, Torquay and Dandenong South. Each centre is thoughtfully designed, filled with engaging resources, and built to support children’s learning and development in a nurturing environment.
In 2021, I was proud to receive the International Women’s Day Award in the Business Category for my work in early childhood education. Our Tarneit centre has also been rated Exceeding in all seven areas by the Department of Education, which is something we are incredibly proud of.
We truly value our team. Their passion, care and commitment to giving every child the best start is the heart of what we do. We see our educators as part of our extended family.
What do I love?
Spending time with our girls. They’re the reason we started this journey. As UK migrants, we relied heavily on childcare and saw how important it was to feel supported. That experience shaped how we built Child’s Play. We wanted to create a service that felt like an extension of family for others too.
What does Child’s Play mean to me?
It feels like family. We created it to be a home away from home. Every child truly matters to us. We feel honoured that families trust us during such an important time in their child’s life. We’re committed to supporting each child with care, guidance and love, helping them grow and reach their full potential in a safe and nurturing environment.

Hi, I’m Ian Johnson. I’m the co-founder of Child’s Play Early Learning, husband to Sam, and dad to our two daughters, Millie and Alexa.
I left school at 16 to start an apprenticeship in finance and accounting. I worked full time while studying for my accounting qualifications in the evenings and on weekends. Over 20 years, I built a career across the UK and Australia in industries like nuclear waste management, stockfeed and manufacturing, eventually becoming a finance director.
My journey into early childhood education began in 2007 when Millie was born. Becoming a dad changed my perspective completely. I saw firsthand just how important quality childcare is, not just for children but for families too. In 2008, Sam and I moved to Australia and, like many others, we relied on childcare to help raise our daughters while we both worked.
That experience stayed with us, and in 2014 we opened our first Child’s Play centre. Since then, we’ve grown to six purpose-built centres across Tarneit, Tarneit West, Point Cook, Wyndham Vale, Torquay and Dandenong South. Every space has been carefully designed to support children’s development, with engaging resources and a nurturing atmosphere that feels like a second home.
Since 2020, I’ve focused on running the operational side of the business. That includes managing everything behind the scenes like payroll, IT, HR, and financial management. While I might not be in the rooms day to day, I’m incredibly passionate about supporting our amazing team and making sure everything runs smoothly so they can do what they do best: care for and inspire the children in our community.

Hi, my name is Caitlin Phillips and I am the Operations Manager where I provide support and guidance to all of the centres. I have experienced almost every role whilst working at Child’s Play, undergoing upskilling of my qualifications as well as working in different roles in my 7 years with the organisation. One of my most recent roles was being the Centre Manager for the Tarneit West Centre and I particularly enjoyed working with the children in a variety of age groups, as both an assistant educator and room leader.
I love playing sport! I am pretty active and generally play sport about 5 times every week.
Child’s Play ELC embodies family. We are a family for our children, we are a family for our community and a family for our staff. It is all about that loving atmosphere for everyone involved.
Watching the children’s personalities develop is so exciting from babies to kindergarten, they develop so much and their cheekiness and enjoyment shine throughout.

Lucy Holmes embarked on her journey in early childhood education in 2006 possessing the NNEB (UK), and Diploma of children services (Australia). With a rich background in leadership roles, including Director, Operations, and Compliance, Lucy has consistently worked within the Victoria and Tasmanian early childhood sector, and along the way completed a Training and Assessment Certificate (TAE4).
Her extensive experience spans operations management for multi-site centres within the corporate sector of early childhood, establishing shared visions for the health and safety of children and community, along with creating strong relationships with the Victorian Early Childhood Regulatory Authority (VECRA)
Child’s Play has embraced paperless solutions across all areas within the business. This comprehensive approach brings numerous benefits, including increased efficiency, reduced environmental impact and improved compliance reporting formations. This successful process has been embraced by the regulatory authorities, as evidence in efficiency, transparency and sustainability is evident. It’s a positive development for all stakeholders involved within the education sector. Compliance can be effectively managed remotely and securely, regardless of location. On-site solutions also provide a comprehensive approach to ensuring adherence to regulations and standards are collaboratively discussed with relevant team members.
Being able to support and inspire staff members across all levels, in relation to compliance and conformity, allows Lucy to maintain a culture of growth, learning, and consistency, ensuring that every team member feels valued and empowered to make a difference, whilst adhering to regulatory requirements which are compliance driven.
What is something I love?
Absolutely love watching Basketball along with supporting our local teams.
How would you describe Child’s Play ELC?
Collaboration within all the centres is embedded and evident, there is a family feeling, along with a sense of belonging and support from all who work at Child’s Play. The team spirit is so apparent, with a “can do” attitude throughout the whole company.

Hi, my name is Tracey Ames and I have a 14-year-old son Joshua. I am English and having just arrived in Australia a month before COVID graced us with her presence, I still feel very much like the new girl as I haven’t really had the opportunity to explore my new surroundings!
I have lived in many places, starting my journey in London at the ripe old age of 17, where I worked for the Metropolitan Police in what can only be described as a ‘National Security’ role! I then moved back to the NorthEast of England and began to work in the Department for Work and Pensions and then on to Saudi Arabia where I worked for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, then back to the NorthEast and last port of call Australia… With the passport now full, hopefully we are here for the long haul! 😊
I have to say I am a bit of a theatre and musicals fan and love to sing, dance and generally when given the opportunity will be on the stage doing whatever is required. I love my son to the moon and stars and back again!
Child’s Play is vibrant, warming, caring and ‘Every Child really does Matter’. Educators are always striving for the best. Ensuring training is up to date and personal development is of the utmost importance to Child’s Play.
I love making a difference, helping children to enjoy learning, have the confidence to live the life they want to live and have fun whilst doing so. Seeing the faces of amazement when they learn something new, feel something different or simply share their experiences is heartwarming. I love my job!

Hi, my name is Zahra!
I’ve been working in early childhood education for over 7 years now, and during that time I’ve taken on various roles, from room leader to educational leader and 2IC. I’m really passionate about creating meaningful learning environments where children feel safe, curious, and confident to explore. Supporting educators and working closely with families is something I truly enjoy.
Outside of work, I love spending time with my family – it really grounds me. I also enjoy coffee, going for walks, and exploring new healthy recipes. Lately, I’ve been into reading about play-based learning and ways to support children’s wellbeing holistically.
I believe the early years are the most important in a child’s life. I love being a part of that journey, watching them grow, learn, and find their voice. It’s so rewarding to build those strong connections and to know you’re helping shape a positive foundation for their future.

Hi, my name is Laura.
I have been a part of the Child’s Play family for 6 years. Over that time, I’ve taken on many roles from Room Leader, 2IC, and Director, to 3IC/Educational Mentor after returning from maternity leave. Now, I’m proud to be the Centre Manager, continuing to support our team, children, and families in a role I’m truly passionate about.
I am a mum of 3 children, and in our spare time we like to have family fun days. Exploring places and doing things we have never done before. Being out and about in nature as much as we can.
One of my greatest passions in working in early childhood is supporting inclusion and inclusive practices for all children, educators, and families.
All my children have attended Child’s Play Torquay and it really is one big family. The children love coming to see their educators and friends. It’s a home away from home for not only the families and children, but the staff as well. I love that when I first started the message from Sam and Ian was ‘if its not good enough for their children, then its not good enough for yours’ and that’s exactly how my children are supported through their early Childhood journey. Every Child Matters.

My name is Corrina, and I am a proud mother of six children, including my youngest – two-year-old twin boys. I have a very supportive partner, Cameron, and family is incredibly important to me.
I have been working in the early childhood education and care sector since 2015, with the majority of my career spent at Child’s Play, where I commenced in 2016. I began as a casual educator, primarily supporting children with additional needs. During this time, I developed a strong passion for inclusive practices and supporting every child to reach their full potential.
Most of my hands-on experience has been within the kindergarten rooms, where I built strong relationships with children, families, and educators. Over time, I progressed into management, where I continue to support high-quality education, team development, and positive outcomes for children and families.
Approachable, strong, caring.
I enjoy my family Friday night games nights, when I have time I enjoy art and craft, baking
Wyndham Vale truly holds a special place in my heart – it really feels like my baby. I have such a deep love and connection to this service and the community we’ve built here. I was fortunate to be part of the journey from the very beginning, starting as 2IC and watching the service grow from an empty piece of land into the beautiful, thriving centre it is today.
I took a year away after having my twin boys, but during that time I realised just how much this place means to me. I missed the families, the children, and the incredible team so much – it didn’t feel complete being away. That’s what brought me back, and I returned as Centre Director with even more passion and appreciation for what we have here.
Wyndham Vale isn’t just a workplace to me, it’s a community, a second home, and a place where genuine relationships are built. It’s somewhere families feel safe, supported, and truly belong. Being part of that, and continuing to grow and nurture this community, is what I am most excited and passionate about every single day.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your experience.
I’ve been working with children for six years now, both in early learning centres and in home-based care. My passion for this work actually started when I was a child myself – I used to go to the park and ‘adopt’ a younger child for the day, making sure they were safe and having fun. Even while studying in high school, it was clear that working with children was something I was drawn to.
What hobbies do you have?
I love playing netball with my friends – it’s a great way to stay active and have fun. I also enjoy relaxing at home, watching movies on the couch with my cats.
Why do you work in early childhood education?
I work in early childhood education because I truly want to make a difference in children’s lives. I believe every child deserves a safe and supportive person to rely on, someone who will advocate for them, stand up for them, and nurture their individual growth.
